History of Sacramento Lifeguard Academy During the 1990s there was a nationwide shortage of lifeguards. Because of this the Lifeguard Academy was launched by the City Of Sacramento, Aquatics Section. In 1998, the Sacramento Lifeguard Academy, funded through various grants including SHRA and Sacramento County, has worked to provide lifeguard training to people in the Sacramento County area. There is still a nationwide shortage, and young people should consider the incredible value of becoming a lifeguard. In 1998, the Lifeguard Academy started slowly with only 5 graduates. By June 2007, the program has grown and has certified over 1000 young people in Lifeguard Training and CPR. Parks and Recreation agencies in the greater Sacramento area; North Highlands, Southgate, Rancho Cordova, Davis, Arden Park and others have hired these professionally trained lifeguards for summer positions. The City of Sacramento has employed over 70 % of these graduates, helping to fill over 200 safety positions annually. |
