Can I just take certain portions of the class?...No. You must take the entire course
during that session to get your lifeguard and CPR certification. In other words, you can't
just take the CPR portion.
What if it rains on the day of my class? ...Class is offered rain or shine, so be prepared.
What is the Pre-Course Test ? ... The pre-course test consists of a 300 yard swim (12
laps) of either freestyle, sidestroke, or breaststroke. You must also swim 20 yards freestyle
and surface dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb. brick and return it 20 yards with both hands
on the brick within 1 minute and 40 seconds. There is also a written test the last day of
class.
Can my friends take the same class with me ? ... Yes, as long as they sign up through
the proper procedures, and pass the pre-course test.
Can my parents watch ? ... It depends on the instructor. Some do allow parents to watch
the pre-course test. You will need to check with the instructor on the first day of class.
Because you are learning to be professional and are trying to get certified to become a
lifeguard, it is less pressure on you for your parents to NOT be there. Remember this is a 40-
hour course and your parents have better things to do with their time.
Do I need to bring a lunch ? ... Yes. Most training locations are not near restaurants. You
will be swimming and participating in classroom work and expending a lot of mental and
physical energy. Please bring a healthy lunch and snacks, and a healthy beverage--water is
best! There are no microwaves or refrigerators so please plan accordingly. Water bottles are
strongly encouraged! Also, eat a good meal the day before and a good breakfast that day.
What type of bathing suit should I wear ? ... For women, a one or two-piece suit that
can withstand water and lots of movement (no revealing bikinis please). For men, regular
swim trunks are best (jammers OK, no Speedos). Suits are subject to the approval of class
instructor.
Is the class difficult? ...No...if you are an intermediate swimmer or decent athlete, you
should be able to pass the physical portion of the class. You must study and pay attention
during the classes, and you can pass the written portion. There is a lot of information to
take in.
Once I have earned my lifeguard training certification, how long is it good for?...You
will receive two certifications, one for lifeguard training and one for CPR for the
Professional Rescuer. The lifeguard cert is good for three years, while the CPR card is good
for ONE year.
What if I lose my cards? ... If you misplace your cards, you must contact the American
Red Cross, SacSierra Chapter (Sacramento). Please have the following information available:
location of the class, starting and ending dates of class and the Instructor's name. Plan to
pay a replacement fee to the Red Cross.
Once I have done all of this, how do I get a lifeguard job? ...City of Sacramento job
applications will be available at your class. You must be at least 16 years old to work for the
City of Sacramento. For more information, please talk to your instructor. See second
